Advocacy

What is "advocacy" or an "advocate"?  It's not easily understood or described at first, but it helps if you think of words like "warrior" or "defender", fighting for an issue or in the defense of others.  Another way to think of it is by comparing advocacy to "lobbying" except that advocates don't get paid.

Through the years, the national, state and local chapters have worked together as advocates on issues that impact the Hispanic community, the Construction community or both, in order to affect a change in policies, attitudes or circumstances.  Our advocacy spans government, corporate and small business, down to the individual person who historically, has had no voice.  The origins of issues that drive our advocacy are sometimes taken from the headlines and sometimes from voices like yours who face unexpected challenges.

The best value of a membership in any association is a single united voice, or "La Voz", when the association acts as an advocate debating or defending issues in a civil manner on behalf of their industry or its membership.  It's not as obvious a benefit like bid notices or plan room privileges which are highly visible, but probably the most important membership benefit of all that you don't see immediately until you need it!  The USHCA de Austin is on the alert for issues and events that impact the construction community and our membership, because what impacts part of our community, impacts us all.  How much is that worth?
