March 22, 2001 National Latino Group Presents Scholarships to 23 Texas Students (San Antonio)--Twenty-three Texas college students, including 18 from the University of Texas at San Antonio received scholarships from a Chicago-based group, Latino Initiatives for the Next Century (LINC). In ceremonies held at the UTSA Downtown Campus, University of Texas System Chancellor Dan Burck, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Ed Sharpe and Vice Chancellor for Community Relations Armando Diaz joined community officials and representatives from UTSA and LINC in congratulating the recipients and their families. San Antonio was chosen as the site for the presentation because of the large number of UTSA recipients. University President Ricardo Romo, who hosted the event, praised LINC for its efforts on behalf of Latino students. "Education is the key to changing lives, and LINC is making that happen for these 23 students and their families today," said Romo. Romo also acknowledged the efforts of Burck, who during a meeting last month in Austin with LINC co-founders Rudy Mulder and David Lizarraga, conveyed the UT System’s interest in partnering with LINC’s scholarship program in Texas. Burck also selected UTSA as the first UT component to explore collaborative opportunities. Mulder said, " This first round of scholarships represents just the beginning of LINC's long-term commitment to Latino students and their families in the state of Texas. We are delighted to continue working closely with the University of Texas System as we prepare to award our next round of scholarships in the fall." Added Burck "On behalf of The University of Texas System, I want to thank LINC officials for coming to Texas and for investing in these students. My congratulations to the recipients and their families." The scholarships are funded through a partnership between LINC, The East Los Angeles Community Union (TELACU), Urban Investment Trust, United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute and Millennium Three. LINC is the first national non-profit organization providing economic empowerment and equity to Latinos in the United States. LINC Advisory Board members in Texas are: Congressman Ruben Hinojosa; State Senator Gonzalo Barrientos; Interim Dean of the UTSA College of Education and Human Development Blandina Cardenas; Sam Guzman, president and CEO of the Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce; Austin businessman Andres "Andy" Ramirez; Ernesto Chavarria, chairman of ITBR Inc.; and Frank Fuentes, chairman of the Hispanic Contractors Associations of Texas and the United States.
